Summary: The World Shrimp Summit 2023 took place in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (24 - 26 July)

The Shrimp Summit 2023 aims to address significant challenges facing the shrimp farming industry in Asia and worldwide, from sluggish production to livelihoods of farmers, with a central focus on sustainability and climate change. The Summit will bring together influential individuals and reputable organizations in the seafood industry to share collective understanding of key issues and explore consensus-based and feasible solutions through discussions

On the behalf of AQUA MINA, Chief Engineer - Mr. Tommy attended the conference and summarized some key points as follows:

1. The Summit focused on the sustainability of the shrimp industry and proposed a support fund for its development, providing assistance to small-scale shrimp farmers with limited access to capital.

2. Carbon certification was discussed continuously as an integral factor in shrimp farming, prompting changes in shrimp rearing and forest planting practices.

3. Research on shrimp's preferred flow velocity and electricity consumption, ranging from 15 - 25cm/s in floating round ponds with a depth of 2m, was shared broadly.

4. Multi-layered RAS shrimp farming solutions, supported by AI technology from Germany, will lead to the establishment of Europe's shrimp production facilities.

5. Feeding machines designed to move around predetermined patterns for each pond, measuring food availability, shrimp stress, and density, significantly increased the efficiency of shrimp farming in larger ponds, outperforming conventional machines by five times.

6. Australian researchers use drones to feed shrimp in aquaculture ponds (50kg per flight).

7. The active involvement of women is crucial for the development of shrimp ecosystem and rice-shrimp farming.

8. Online courses from Thailand will be available to provide accessible and effective knowledge to the local communities/farmers.

9. Disease-resistant shrimp breeds are being developed as a solution for future sustainable farming practices.

10. High stocking density is a major cause of stress and diseases in shrimp.

Whether to pursue infrastructure investment for high-density shrimp farming or follow a natural approach like Ecuador? It is a decision that must be carefully calculated based on geographical conditions and government management.

11. Two scientists from Japan and the United States were honored for their lifelong contributions to the global shrimp industry.

12. VNF (Vietnam Food) shared its journey of using seafood by-products as raw materials for a sector with numerous new products.

13. The world has begun to utilize AI for shrimp farming management and collect big data. The global adoption of AI for shrimp farming management and data collection has started. If Vietnam fails to adapt to this technology, it faces the risk of lagging behind and losing its current standing in the industry.

14. An Indian company offers shrimp farming equipment for rent on a monthly basis and some of their products are available for as low as $2 USD per month.

15. Most shrimp farming regions around the world access water from the East.

16. Petite Vietnamese women – Mrs. Kim Thanh from Kim Delta Vietnam are undertaking significant tasks, such as creating and managing mangrove shrimp ecosystems.

17. Walmart holds the title of being the world's largest shrimp retailer. They have explicit commitments and strategies to utilize low-emission products, as stated on their official website. To align with these prominent buyers, we must comply with their regulations.

18. ASC GLOBAL GAP are important certifications, but currently, only 3% of shrimp farmers are confirmed. The remaining 97% of farms worldwide need additional certifications to facilitate better management and support, rather than leaving them to navigate on their own.

19. Bangladesh possesses a substantial farming area, yet currently lacks source of vanamei. Their average production stands at 368kg/ha/year. With appropriate support, they could achieve significant growth, given their vast available land area.

20. Brazil intends to import vannamei for aquaculture purposes. They are free from EMS and EHP diseases, while the prevalent disease is IMNV, leading to muscle necrosis. They plan to adopt a farming approach similar to Ecuador's. Despite having a population of 250 million, their current shrimp production is inadequate to meet domestic consumption demands entirely.

21. Europe considers insects as a type of animal. This serves as a barrier to using black soldier flies as an alternative food source for shrimp.

In conclusion, Engineer Tommy from AQUA MINA wishes to give some general feedback regarding the conference:

- The organizers are very professional and supportive of participants;

- We must gradually become accustomed to the procedures of international conferences: punctuality is a must, with no exceptions for anyone, and additional English language practice.

Expressing the desire for Ho Chi Minh City to become the biennial venue for the World Shrimp Summit. Additionally, emphasizing the importance of increased support from government agencies to enhance the city's value and the Vietnamese shrimp industry.
