Can Tho invests 10B VND in aquaculture water quality monitoring

Unpredictable weather conditions combined with discharge pressures from production activities are increasing the risk of water quality degradation in Can Tho’s aquaculture areas. To protect key farming ecosystems, the city has approved a water environment monitoring and early warning plan for the 2026–2030 period with a total budget of over 10.23 billion VND.

The program prioritizes the protection of key farming species: freshwater pangasius along with brackish water black tiger shrimp and whiteleg shrimp.

1. Pangasius farming areas: The monitoring network establishes 17 intake water sampling points and 5 representative farming ponds across core production zones.

2. Brackish water shrimp farming areas (over 52,000 ha): 16 monitoring points are deployed in key brackish and saline water areas.

The testing protocol includes on-site parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen, salinity, temperature) measured 4 times a month. In-depth indicators such as microbiology, nutrients, pesticide residues, and heavy metals are collected and processed at a rate of 600 to 800 samples per year.

A key feature of the plan is timeliness: analytical reports must reach farmers within a maximum of 3 days to allow timely adjustments to water intake or stocking. In addition, 25 specialized training courses will be conducted to enhance practical response capabilities for farmers. This 10.23 billion VND leverage aims to build a disease-resilient and sustainable aquaculture sector in Can Tho.
