Cần Thơ University leads shrimp disease control through science, technology, and practical application
As Vietnam’s shrimp farming industry continues to face environmental fluctuations, increasingly complex diseases, and growing competitive pressure, shrimp health management has become a vital requirement for the sustainable development of the aquaculture sector. It is no longer simply about treating individual disease outbreaks; the shrimp industry now requires a more comprehensive approach in which science and technology play a central role in forecasting, prevention, and risk management.
In early May 2026, Cần Thơ University, in collaboration with Vemedim Corporation, organized the 2026 CTU Aquaculture Science Conference under the theme: “Shrimp Health Management and Disease Control Under Current Conditions.” The event attracted scientists, experts, businesses, government agencies, and aquaculture communities across the Mekong Delta region.
Professor Vũ Ngọc Út stated that Vietnam’s shrimp farming industry is facing systemic challenges. Dangerous diseases such as Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND), white spot disease, and EHP not only cause significant economic losses but also reduce productivity and the stability of the entire production chain.
According to Professor Vũ Ngọc Út, a major concern today is that many disease outbreaks are no longer caused solely by pathogens but are closely linked to environmental changes, seed quality, and pond management practices. Therefore, the shrimp industry must strongly shift from “disease treatment” to “comprehensive health management,” from “passive response” to “proactive prevention,” moving toward a sustainable development model based on ecological balance.

Connecting Research with Shrimp Farming Practices
One of the highlights of the conference was that presentations were designed to closely connect scientific research with practical production needs. During the morning session, experts focused on analyzing key factors affecting shrimp farming efficiency today, including pond environmental management, seed quality, and disease conditions in major farming regions.
Professor Trương Quốc Phú from the College of Aquaculture and Fisheries at Cần Thơ University presented a report on “Environmental and Disease Management in Shrimp Ponds,” emphasizing that farming environments are rapidly changing due to climate change, extreme temperatures, and declining water quality. These factors create favorable conditions for pathogens while weakening shrimp immunity.
From the business perspective, Mr. Trình Trung Phi, Deputy General Director of Technical and Commercial Shrimp Division at Việt Úc Group, shared insights on “The Importance of Seed Quality in Modern Shrimp Farming.” According to him, high-quality and disease-free shrimp seed not only improves survival rates but also reduces disease risks throughout the farming cycle.
Meanwhile, Mr. Lê Thành Cường from Nha Trang University updated participants on “Disease Situations in Shrimp Farming Areas of Central Vietnam,” providing practical perspectives on current disease developments in key farming zones.
During the afternoon session, the conference focused on specialized solutions such as EHP prevention and control, nutritional solutions to strengthen shrimp health, probiotic applications, and digital transformation in shrimp farming risk management. The presentations demonstrated that modern shrimp farming is rapidly shifting toward biotechnology applications, digital data, and smart environmental management solutions that reduce dependence on chemicals and antibiotics.
According to Mr. Lưu Phước Hậu, Standing Deputy General Director of Vemedim Corporation, cooperation between the College of Aquaculture and Fisheries at Cần Thơ University and businesses not only has professional significance but also helps build a platform connecting scientific research with practical production. Through the conference, opinions from scientists, enterprises, and farmers contribute to proposing more effective approaches for shrimp health management and disease control.

Cần Thơ University Leads the Shrimp Industry Ecosystem
Beyond its roles in education and research, the College of Aquaculture and Fisheries at Cần Thơ University is gradually affirming its role as a central connector within the shrimp industry ecosystem in the Mekong Delta. Through scientific forums, technology transfer activities, and business cooperation, many university research results have been directly applied in practical production.
As the shrimp industry faces increasing pressure from climate change, export market requirements, and stricter biosecurity standards, the role of research universities has become even more important. In addition to providing high-quality human resources, universities also create technological solutions for sustainable production.
Professor Vũ Ngọc Út emphasized:
“The College of Aquaculture and Fisheries at Cần Thơ University always defines its mission as a center for education, research, and science and technology transfer serving the community. We are committed to continuing to accompany farmers, businesses, and government agencies in developing effective, safe, and sustainable shrimp farming models.”
Through the connection between scientists, enterprises, and aquaculture communities, science and technology are gradually becoming a key driving force helping Vietnam’s shrimp industry improve competitiveness and adapt effectively to new challenges.
