Early-Season Shrimp Fetch Good Prices, Farmers Eagerly Harvesting
At the shrimp farming area in Ky Ha commune (Ky Anh town), Mr. Mai Van Toan recently harvested nearly 1.2 tons of market-size shrimp. “The shrimp reached an average size of 40–45 pcs/kg and were bought by traders at over VND 160,000/kg—about VND 10,000–15,000 higher than last year,” said Mr. Toan. “Prices are quite good and the consumption is favorable, giving farmers confidence to invest in the next stocking cycle.”
He added: “This year’s early-season weather was quite erratic, causing some households to stock late or re-stock due to disease outbreaks. It’s expected that by early July, the area will enter peak harvesting season.”
In Ho Do commune (Ha Tinh city), several households have also harvested partially due to concerns about unstable weather impacting shrimp health. According to Mr. Hoang Hai Duong, Vice Chairman of the Ho Do Commune People's Committee, the commune has 93.6 hectares of shrimp farming, including five high-tech farming models, with the remainder being intensive and semi-extensive systems. “As it’s still early in the season, prices are relatively high, providing decent profits for local farmers.”

Most shrimp are sold to traders in Ha Tinh, Thanh Hoa, and Nghe An before reaching northern markets. A notable bright spot in this year’s spring-summer shrimp crop is the significant technical shift. Many farmers have boldly invested in high-tech intensive models to better manage environmental factors and improve productivity. The entire province now has over 620 hectares of intensive, high-tech shrimp farming. Several new technologies and farming processes have been successfully implemented, such as Biofloc, 2–3-phase farming systems, and recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS).
Mr. Nguyen Viet Khanh (Dan Truong commune, Nghi Xuan district) is one such farmer applying modern technologies. His setup includes round tanks with covers, three-phase farming, the use of probiotics, and a fully enclosed recirculating filtration system within greenhouse structures. Thanks to these innovations, the shrimp grow stably, face few diseases, and enjoy a survival rate of over 80%.
“My model spans over 4 hectares, including seven round steel-framed covered tanks, each around 700 m². After more than two years of operation, I’ve found it saves on environmental treatment costs, reduces farming risks, and delivers strong yields. I recently sold over 18 tons of healthy, uniform-size shrimp at a good price,” Khanh shared.
In Dong Mon ward (Ha Tinh city), Mr. Phan Van Huy also practices enclosed recirculating farming and is preparing to sell over 6 tons of shrimp. He hopes the current favorable prices will hold. “This crop, I focused on high-tech intensive farming using round tanks and strict care protocols. The shrimp grew well with minimal loss. If the price remains above VND 125,000/kg for 60 pcs/kg size shrimp, my family can expect a decent profit,” Huy said.
Like Huy, many farmers across the province are entering the spring-summer harvest season with high hopes. Surveys from large shrimp-farming districts such as Cam Xuyen, Nghi Xuan, Thach Ha, Ky Anh, and Ky Anh town show that harvesting has begun.

Current prices for live whiteleg shrimp are:
100 pcs/kg: ~VND 105,000/kg
60 pcs/kg: ~VND 140,000/kg
50 pcs/kg: ~VND 160,000/kg
30 pcs/kg: over VND 230,000/kg
Frozen shrimp prices are typically VND 10,000/kg lower than live shrimp. These are considered good prices compared to recent years, giving shrimp farmers renewed optimism.
However, challenges remain from now until the end of the harvest season. Production costs have increased due to rising feed, medication, electricity, and labor prices. Disease risks also persist—especially as prolonged hot weather may lead to biological stress and weakened immunity in shrimp.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hai, a shrimp trader from Nghe An, commented: “Compared to the same time last year, shrimp prices have risen nearly 10%. We’re focusing on early purchasing to fulfill large contracts. Prices are up because early in the season, shrimp supply is still limited while demand remains high, creating a supply-demand imbalance.”
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoai Thuy, Head of Aquaculture Management Division (Ha Tinh Fisheries Sub-Department), the province currently has over 1,500 hectares of whiteleg shrimp farming. Farmers are entering the spring-summer harvest season with higher selling prices than in early 2024. A key driver behind the domestic price rebound is the positive recovery of export markets during the first months of 2025, including Ha Tinh.
Looking ahead, the province is expected to enter a prolonged hot season with unpredictable weather. Farmers are advised to closely monitor pond environmental indicators such as pH, alkalinity, and algae density to detect and address anomalies early.
Additionally, they should strictly follow technical protocols and supplement with minerals and vitamins to boost shrimp immunity. For high-density ponds, partial harvesting is recommended to reduce environmental stress, maintain production efficiency, and take advantage of favorable selling prices.
