Intensive shrimp farming generates profits 7 to 10 times higher
Many farmers have achieved yields of 50–70 tons per hectare, earning profits 7 to 10 times higher than conventional intensive shrimp farming models. Mrs. Trinh Thi Loan, a farmer in My Long Nam commune, Cau Ngang district, who has completed several high-tech super-intensive shrimp crops, shared that this modern farming method offers sustainable efficiency. Thanks to technical processes such as using HDPE liners for pond bottoms and walls, net houses for biosecurity, floating oxygen diffusers, and automatic feeders, the risk of soil-borne diseases is significantly reduced. The shrimp grow uniformly, and the quality is far superior compared to traditional earthen pond farming.
Mrs. Loan further explained that her family’s 1.5-hectare shrimp farm includes 8 ponds, each 1,600 m², along with a complete system of sedimentation and water treatment ponds that operate in a closed-loop, discharging no wastewater into the environment. With this setup, she cultivates two whiteleg shrimp crops per year, yielding over 50 tons of commercial shrimp per crop. After deducting expenses, the profit exceeds VND 2 billion per crop.

According to Mr. Tran Truong Giang, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tra Vinh province, the province encourages eligible farmers with sufficient land and capital to invest in high-tech super-intensive shrimp farming to increase income. Every year, Tra Vinh allocates a proportionate budget for research and the application of scientific and technological advancements, which are transferred to farmers to promote progressive and sustainable shrimp farming practices.
In 2024, the province planned to farm over 31,000 hectares of black tiger shrimp and whiteleg shrimp. As of now, the total farming area for these two shrimp species has reached over 28,400 hectares, with harvested output exceeding 69,730 tons, of which whiteleg shrimp alone accounted for over 61,960 tons—more than 74% of the annual target.
The province aims that by 2025, coastal areas will have around 15,000 hectares of aquaculture operated under clean, industrial, and high-tech farming models for both black tiger shrimp and whiteleg shrimp.
