Shrimp Farming Output Surges Thanks to High-Tech Applications
According to the Sub-Department of Fisheries and Fisheries Surveillance of Kien Giang Province, the aquaculture area in the province has expanded significantly from 270,590 hectares in 2020 to 325,000 hectares by 2025. Correspondingly, total aquaculture output increased from 264,105 tons to 410,300 tons. Specifically, brackish water shrimp farming areas rose from 134,235 hectares to around 137,050 hectares, with output jumping from 92,490 tons to 155,000 tons.
Intensive and semi-intensive shrimp farming models have shown especially strong growth in both area and productivity during this period. In 2020, the province had 3,685 hectares under such farming systems, with an average yield of 8.4 tons/ha and total output of 31,000 tons. By 2025, the farming area is projected to reach 5,000 hectares, with yields averaging 12.6 tons/ha and total output of 63,000 tons.
2030 Target: Scaling Up Intensive Farming

Under the province’s development plan, by 2030, the total area of intensive and semi-intensive shrimp farming is expected to reach 6,370 hectares, with a projected output of 78,480 tons—accounting for approximately 50% of the province’s total farmed shrimp production.
This remarkable growth has been made possible by the transition from traditional farming methods to modern, high-tech shrimp farming. Farmers and businesses have increasingly adopted advanced systems such as Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), Biofloc, semi-Biofloc, multi-phase shrimp farming (2–3 stages), and the use of probiotics for water treatment. Moreover, the integration of IoT-based technologies has enabled better monitoring and control of farming conditions.
Embracing Global Standards and Traceability
There has also been a strong push toward sustainable and certified shrimp farming. Brackish water shrimp farms are being developed to meet VietGAP, GlobalG.A.P., BAP, and ASC standards. These efforts are closely tied to assigning farming zone identification codes and ensuring product traceability, helping local producers meet the stringent requirements of international export markets.
