Promising RAS Technology for Eel Farming in Quang Nam
Sustainability with RAS
RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture System) is a sustainable aquaculture method distinguished from traditional outdoor pond farming by creating a controlled ecosystem within indoor tanks. The system filters and recirculates water, ensuring a cleaner environment for farming.
RAS offers numerous advantages aligned with global trends in sustainable aquaculture. It enables control over all input factors, farming conditions, and waste management. This minimizes, or even eliminates, the use of antibiotics and chemicals.

Additionally, by incorporating renewable energy and advanced filtration technology, RAS significantly reduces energy and water consumption, along with CO emissions. This technology allows aquaculture facilities to be established in diverse locations less affected by climate change and closer to consumption markets. The RAS system includes grow-out tanks, mechanical and biological filtration units, sedimentation tanks, and automated control systems.
In Vietnam, RAS has been applied to the farming of high-value species such as shrimp broodstock, eels, groupers, and loaches.
Expansion of Eel Farming
Eels can be farmed in ponds, lakes, cages, or cement tanks. Known for their resilience and low susceptibility to diseases, they are cultivated in many regions.
In Quang Nam, freshwater fish farming faces challenges due to the reliance on earth ponds and shared water sources with rice production, complicating water supply.
To address these issues, since 2018, Nguyễn Văn Quang, an engineer in Đại Hiệp Commune, Đại Lộc District, has led a scientific study on eel farming using RAS. After two years of trials with 325 juvenile eels, the survival rate reached 98.5%, with an average harvest size of 2 kg per eel. The RAS system allowed precise control of environmental factors like temperature, pH, and water quality, fostering optimal growth and development.
Building on this success, in 2024, the Agricultural Engineering Center of Đại Lộc District transferred RAS technology for eel farming.

Three households participated in the project, operating eight tanks and farming 2,500 juvenile eels. The center covered 50% of the costs for juveniles and feed with a protein content exceeding 42%. Regular training sessions and hands-on guidance were provided for installing the tanks and filtration systems. Water quality indicators were meticulously monitored before introducing the eels.
After six months, the eels reached an average weight of 300 g, with a 98% survival rate and minimal disease incidence due to effective water management. Projections indicate that after 24 months, the eels will weigh an average of 1.7 kg each, with an average yield of 300 kg per tank. With market prices ranging from 450,000 to 520,000 VND/kg, net profits are estimated at over 80 million VND per tank (7–12 m).
Nguyễn Văn Quang, Director of the Agricultural Engineering Center in Đại Lộc, stated:
“To date, 11 households in Đại Lộc have adopted RAS for eel farming, particularly in Đại Hiệp, Đại Hòa, and Đại Thắng communes. Our future plans aim to expand this model to 100–150 households, farming approximately 100,000 juvenile eels. Annual production is expected to reach 50–70 tons, generating revenues of 25–30 billion VND. We also plan to apply RAS technology to other species like loaches and swamp eels.”
