Astonishing Model of
The land-based shrimp farming model of Mr. Tran Duc Dung in Thien Cam Town (Cam Xuyen)
Traditionally, shrimp farming in Cam Xuyen involved ponds on land or sand, but now Mr. Dũng’s shrimp farming in tanks is a novel approach that has amazed many locals who come to see this new method firsthand.
Without needing to dig or renovate ponds, Mr. Dung uses 3,000 square meters of land and circular steel frames lined with tarpaulin, along with a system of oxygen and equipment. His model currently has 10 circular tanks, each holding around 500 cubic meters, with two sedimentation tanks to help manage waste and improve water quality during farming.
Tank farming allows for better control of environmental factors
Mr. Dung shared that he had spent over four years farming shrimp using high-tech methods on sandy land, but the results were inconsistent. The main issue was the inability to control the pond environment, which made the shrimp susceptible to diseases like Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS) and white spot disease. Moreover, traditional ponds, which are over 2,500 square meters in size, are difficult to manage when problems arise. This prompted him to shift away from pond farming and to travel to southern provinces to learn about land-based shrimp farming.
Shrimp are acclimated in nursery tanks before being introduced to the main tanks
This bold decision was put into action at the beginning of the year. After four months of constructing the system with a total investment of more than 500 million VND, Mr. Dung now operates 8 production tanks stocked with 600,000 shrimp. After two months of careful nurturing, the shrimp have grown well, reaching a size of about 150 shrimp per kilogram.
The system includes sedimentation tanks to maintain water quality in the main tanks
“Farming shrimp in tanks offers the advantage of easy care and management, and allows for better control of environmental factors. Shrimp grow quickly in a clean environment. Furthermore, in smaller areas, I can stock larger shrimp post-larvae, reducing losses and risks while shortening the farming time. Additionally, I use the waste and shrimp shells for biogas to generate fuel, preventing environmental pollution,” Mr. Dung explained.
Shrimp in tanks are thriving, currently reaching a size of 150 shrimp per kilogram
Seeing the model in person, one can observe that the shrimp are lively and energetic, leaping around when scooped up. According to Mr. Dung, the shrimp will be harvested in about two months when they reach a size of 40 shrimp per kilogram, which commands a higher price.
Tank farming is especially advantageous for winter shrimp farming, which yields higher economic value. Mr. Dung plans to invest an additional 400 million VND to build greenhouse covers and expand the tank area for winter shrimp farming. His model has already attracted many shrimp farmers from the region to visit, learn, and consider investing in similar systems.
The waste management system prevents environmental pollution
According to Nguyen Huu Minh, an expert from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Cam Xuyen District, Mr. Dung’s tank farming model is the first land-based shrimp farming system in the area. This new method promises high efficiency, giving farmers an alternative way to increase productivity, quality, and economic returns while protecting the environment. It contributes to developing sustainable, industrial-scale shrimp farming.
