New Shrimp Farming Leaders Emerge After Provincial Mergers
Specifically:
Black tiger shrimp: 628.8 thousand ha, 338.8 thousand tons
Whiteleg shrimp: 121 thousand ha, 951.7 thousand tons
Shrimp exports reached USD 3.9 billion, up 14% from the previous year
The report also shows that 28 provinces and cities across the country are engaged in brackish water shrimp farming. Among them, Bạc Liêu, Cà Mau, Sóc Trăng, Bến Tre, and Kiên Giang are the five largest producers.
However, following administrative mergers between several provinces, the scale and distribution of shrimp farming have changed significantly.
Cà Mau Becomes Vietnam’s Largest Shrimp Producer Post-Merger

Preliminary data indicates that after Cà Mau and Bạc Liêu merged, the newly formed province now has:
407,251 ha of brackish water shrimp farming
509,360 tons in production (2024)
This makes Cà Mau the largest shrimp farming province in the country, accounting for 39.5% of national shrimp output and 54.3% of total shrimp farming area.
In 2024:
Cà Mau’s shrimp export value: USD 1.27 billion
Bạc Liêu’s shrimp export value: USD 1.13 billion
Combined, they account for 61.5% of the national shrimp export value, totaling USD 2.4 billion
Other Regional Changes After Provincial Mergers
Vĩnh Long, previously known for pangasius and cage fish farming (but not shrimp), merged with Bến Tre (ranked 4th in shrimp output) and Trà Vinh (ranked 6th).
➝ The new region has: 92,331 ha of shrimp farming and 258,270 tons in output.
Cần Thơ City, previously without shrimp farming activity, merged with Sóc Trăng and Hậu Giang, making it the third-largest shrimp-producing locality, with 204,554 tons annually.
Newcomer to the Shrimp Industry: Đắk Lắk

Before the merger, Đắk Lắk—a Central Highlands province—was known for its strengths in coffee, pepper, durian, and fruit cultivation. However, after merging with Phú Yên, Đắk Lắk has unexpectedly become one of the top 10 shrimp-producing provinces in Vietnam.
Other provinces rounding out the top 10 in shrimp output include: An Giang, Quảng Ninh, Ho Chi Minh City, Đồng Tháp, Thanh Hóa, Đắk Lắk, and Nghệ An.
