Quang Ninh Accelerates Digital Transformation in Shrimp Farming, Rising to Lead Northern Vietnam
Quang Ninh is emerging as the largest shrimp-producing locality in Northern Vietnam after accelerating the adoption of high technology and deploying digital infrastructure in farming area management, traceability, and disease control. This transformation marks a significant shift for the province, which less than a decade ago had a relatively limited scale of shrimp farming. Previously characterized by scattered extensive farming practices, Quang Ninh now focuses on two key species: whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) and black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon). Many farms have adopted biofloc models, IoT-based environmental monitoring systems, and automated feeding technologies. Average productivity reaches approximately 10 tons per hectare, while several high-tech models report yields ranging from 25 to 30 tons per hectare.

A major turning point occurred in 2017 when Viet Uc Group inaugurated a shrimp seed production center in Dam Ha District. The facility currently supplies around 2 billion post-larvae annually, including cold-tolerant shrimp lines that enable winter farming — a strategic advantage for the northern region. At the same time, the province has strengthened the development of closed value chains and farmer–enterprise linkages to ensure stable quality and income. By mid-2025, more than 500 aquaculture facilities in the province had been certified and assigned electronic ID codes under the digital transformation program. A centralized data system now supports traceability, disease monitoring, and quality control across the sector. According to the Department of Seas, Islands and Fisheries Surveillance, as of June 2025, the province’s total aquaculture area reached 32,000 hectares, with shrimp farming accounting for nearly 25%, comprising approximately 2,250 farms concentrated mainly in coastal districts In 2025, the provincial agriculture sector targets total aquatic production of 175,000 tons, with farmed shrimp expected to contribute over 25% of the total output. With a high-tech orientation and comprehensive digital transformation strategy, Quang Ninh’s model is increasingly viewed as a potential benchmark for northern provinces amid rising global market demand and increasingly stringent import requirements.
