Indonesia develops thousands of fishing villages and makes strategic investments for fishermen
According to the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) correspondent in Jakarta, Indonesia is making strong investments in the marine economy sector to maximize the potential of ocean resources and meet the world’s growing demand for seafood-based protein sources.
Speaking at the “Red and White Fishing Village” on Miangas Island, part of the Talaud archipelago in North Sulawesi Province — the most remote region of Indonesia — on May 9, President Prabowo Subianto emphasized that Indonesia is naturally endowed with vast marine resources and needs to utilize them more effectively to support economic development and improve people’s livelihoods. The “Red and White Fishing Village” program is part of the national strategy to strengthen food security and develop the marine economy.
He also announced a large-scale investment plan for the marine economy and the development of fishing villages nationwide, aiming to complete 1,386 “Red and White Fishing Villages” across the country by the end of 2026, while continuing to build around 1,000 additional fishing villages each year.
The President stressed that the development of the marine economy, or “blue economy,” in Indonesia begins with strengthening the role of fishermen, who are regarded as the frontline force of the national fisheries sector.
The “Red and White Fishing Village” program is considered one of the key solutions to expand fishermen’s access to infrastructure and modern fisheries logistics services.
These fishing villages are being built and equipped with comprehensive infrastructure such as ports, cold storage facilities, fuel stations, seafood preservation centers, and modern fishing vessels, creating a fully integrated marine economic ecosystem.

In addition, the Indonesian government plans to provide nearly 1,600 fishing boats to fishermen nationwide. The management of these vessels will be entrusted to fishermen’s cooperatives in order to improve operational efficiency and community governance.
According to data from the pilot project in the Samber Binyeri area of Papua Province, fishermen’s productivity has doubled thanks to the program, while the average number of fishing days at sea has increased by 44%.
The program also demonstrates Indonesia’s priority in promoting balanced development between central regions and border areas, while positioning the marine economy as one of the country’s strategic pillars in the coming period.
