Vietnam’s Shrimp Export Prices to the U.S. and China Rise Despite Sluggish Volumes
Exports in March are expected to recover slowly due to a limited number of new orders. Processing plants continue to struggle in price negotiations amid intense competition from India and Ecuador.
In February, Vietnam exported 17,608 metric tons of white-leg shrimp—a 7% drop from January but a 16% increase over February 2024. The decline was largely due to reduced exports to key markets: China and Hong Kong fell by 30%, the EU by 17%, and the UK by 19%. Meanwhile, growth in other markets was modest: U.S. (+6%), Japan (+9%), and South Korea (+2%).

Despite this, the average export price for white-leg shrimp increased by over 5% to $9.01/kg across all markets.
Most major processing plants resumed raw shrimp procurement in early February following the Lunar New Year holiday, with purchasing demand similar to January. However, transactions for small-size shrimp (e.g. 100 pcs/kg) declined due to reduced interest from Chinese traders. Processors raised buying prices for size 20–40 shrimp to maintain supply levels amid limited availability, while prices for sizes 50–100 fell compared to January.
Farm-gate prices for 20–40 count shrimp rose 1–3%.
Smaller sizes saw a 5% price drop.
In Week 12 (March 17–23), U.S. market prices for imported white-leg and black tiger shrimp remained relatively stable.
Vietnam’s Black Tiger Shrimp Export Prices Surge
In February, Vietnam exported 1,475 metric tons of black tiger shrimp to the U.S.—down 21% from January but up 7% from the same period last year.
The average export price for black tiger shrimp increased 14% to $12.77/kg across all markets.
Purchasing activity for black tiger shrimp remained sluggish due to limited export contracts and off-season supply, as farmers delayed stocking from late 2024. Consequently, the availability of large-size shrimp in early 2025 was low. To sustain operations, many processors raised procurement prices for sizes 20–50 and 80 count, pushing raw shrimp prices up 1–2%.

Export Price Trends by Market
China: Vietnam’s black tiger shrimp exports fell to 1,637 tons, the lowest since Feb 2023, but the average price rose 9.1% to $7.2/kg, the highest since March 2023.
Japan: Average export price rose 5.6% to $9.5/kg.
South Korea: Average price up 5.3% to $8/kg.
U.S. (Black Tiger Shrimp): Export volume rose slightly to 162 tons, but the average price jumped 11% to $17.8/kg, the highest in nearly a year.
EU: Price increased 3% to $10.2/kg, the first rise since October 2024, though export volume dropped by over half to 103 tons.
South Korea (Black Tiger Shrimp): Imports declined for the third consecutive month to 87 tons, and the average price dipped 2.6% to $11.4/kg.
