Shrimp prices drop sharply, farmers worry about unprofitable farming
On March 31, Mr. Khiêm, a shrimp farmer in Vĩnh Châu Ward (Cần Thơ City), said that in recent days, whiteleg shrimp prices have been falling sharply.
“Every time I wake up, shrimp prices have already changed. If prices go up, farmers are happy. But now, prices keep dropping day by day, and I’m very anxious,” Mr. Khiêm said.
According to him, compared to a month ago, whiteleg shrimp prices have dropped significantly. Specifically, shrimp sized at 100 pieces per kilogram are currently being purchased by traders at around VND 97,000, down more than VND 10,000 per kilogram. Meanwhile, larger shrimp (30 pieces per kilogram) are priced at only about VND 128,000 per kilogram, a decrease of approximately VND 15,000.
Vietnam’s shrimp exports have declined in many markets due to high prices.
With nearly 20 years of experience in shrimp farming, Mr. Mười Thương (Vĩnh Long) said this is currently the favorable season, so farmers are still investing as usual.
However, with shrimp prices falling as they are now, Mr. Mười Thương said it feels like “sitting on a hot pan.”
“Rising fuel prices have pushed up a series of input costs such as seed stock, aquaculture veterinary products, feed, and bank interest rates.

Under these conditions, only if production targets are met can farmers hope to make a profit. If shrimp fall ill and output is not achieved, there is a high risk of losses,” he added.
Mr. Võ Văn Phục, CEO of Vietnam Clean Seafood Joint Stock Company, said that following the outbreak of armed conflict in the Middle East, many costs in the shrimp farming and export processing chain have fluctuated significantly, especially transportation costs. Some businesses have reduced their purchasing volumes, while consumers, facing general economic difficulties, are also tightening their spending, which has affected raw shrimp prices.
Based on his experience, Mr. Phục noted that in previous years, shrimp prices usually began to fluctuate around May, when the main harvest season starts.
However, this year, prices have already started to decline since early March.
“We hope that the conflict in the Middle East will soon come to an end, demand will recover strongly, and raw shrimp prices will rebound, helping shrimp farmers in the Mekong Delta feel less worried,” Mr. Phục said.
