End-of-Season Shrimp Prices Reach Record Highs
According to shrimp farmers, shrimp prices are expected to continue rising in the coming period due to tight supply while market demand remains high toward the end of the year.
Mr. Ngo Minh Tuan, from Tan Phu Dong commune, Dong Thap Province, owner of a 40-hectare farm with 100 shrimp ponds applying high-tech farming methods, said that prices for high-tech farmed whiteleg shrimp are currently as follows: shrimp sized 20–25 pieces/kg are being purchased at VND 250,000–260,000 per kg; size 30 pieces/kg at over VND 200,000 per kg; and size 100 pieces/kg at over VND 100,000 per kg. These are record-high prices seen in many years. With an average production cost of around VND 90,000 per kg, farmers can earn a profit of VND 80,000–90,000 per kg for large-sized shrimp.
Mr. Ngo Minh Tuan noted that shrimp prices have increased because it is the end of the production season, when supply is scarce while year-end market demand requires large volumes. In addition, storms and floods in the central region have caused damage to aquaculture areas, resulting in insufficient shrimp supply for the market. Moreover, toward the end of the season, fewer households are able to stock shrimp, and those that do stock will only be able to harvest close to the Lunar New Year.
According to seafood processing enterprises, the end-of-season rise in shrimp prices is mainly due to reduced supply. At this time, many farmers have already completed harvesting their ponds, leaving limited shrimp available on the market, while domestic consumption and export demand remain stable. Meanwhile, purchasing enterprises are proactively raising prices to accumulate raw materials in preparation for year-end orders.
Dong Thap is considered a locality with great potential for the development of freshwater and brackish-water aquaculture. The sharp increase in end-of-season shrimp prices serves as an incentive for farmers to continue investing and expanding production. Thanks to the application of high-tech shrimp farming models, many households have achieved high and uniform yields, enabling them to sell at favorable prices. However, for the shrimp industry to develop sustainably, close coordination among authorities, enterprises, and farmers is required.

According to the Dong Thap Department of Agriculture and Environment, the province’s agricultural sector is oriented toward encouraging environmentally friendly, high-tech shrimp farming models; applying monitoring systems and early disease warning mechanisms; and building value chains from production to consumption to reduce the risk of “bumper harvests but low prices.”
Proincial authorities also advise farmers to diversify aquaculture species, combining shrimp farming with fish or other rotational farming models to reduce environmental pressure and stabilize income. According to the Dong Thap Department of Agriculture and Environment, the province’s total coastal aquaculture area in 2025 reached 21,690 hectares, achieving 104.9% of the plan, while farming and capture output exceeded 1 million tons, up 3.8% year-on-year.
According to the Dong Thap Provincial People’s Committee, in the coming period the locality will invest in developing industrial-scale, high-tech aquaculture zones to produce large volumes of commercial aquatic products. At the same time, the province will accelerate the application of scientific and technological advances, widely apply biosecure and disease-safe production, assign farming area codes, and link these with traceability, food safety requirements, and good aquaculture practices (GAP).
In recent years, the province’s aquaculture sector has continued to focus on key species such as pangasius, shrimp, red tilapia, and mollusks. In 2026, Dong Thap aims to reach an aquaculture area of 22,790 hectares, with total farming and capture output exceeding 1 million tons. To date, the province has 80 seafood processing plants for export with a combined capacity of nearly 1 million tons per year.
Notably, Dong Thap Province is strongly restructuring its agricultural sector toward green and sustainable growth, focusing on developing the agricultural economy, applying science and technology, and strengthening market linkages to enhance product value and improve livelihoods.
