Sharing: Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture in Recirculating Systems (IMTA-RAS) Shrimp Farming Model
A study on a zero-discharge Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (IMTA-RAS) shrimp farming model, conducted by a team of researchers and published in the journal Aquacultural Engineering (2025), is paving a new path for Vietnam's aquaculture sector. This comes at a critical time, as the shrimp industry is grappling with increasing challenges such as pollution, rising production costs, and disease outbreaks.
Unlike traditional shrimp farming methods, the IMTA-RAS model operates on a closed-loop recirculating principle, integrating the culture of whiteleg shrimp, tilapia, green seaweed, and red seaweed. The system discharges no waste into the environment and requires no water exchange throughout the 124-day culture cycle, thereby improving water quality and protecting the surrounding ecosystem. The shrimp achieved a survival rate of 62.2%, an average market size of 50.3g/shrimp, a yield of 6.9 kg/m², and a feed conversion ratio (FCR) of 1.59, demonstrating high feed efficiency.

This model not only minimizes environmental impact but also effectively recycles nutrients, retaining 45.9% of nitrogen and 27.6% of phosphorus within the biomass of shrimp, fish, and seaweeds. All shrimp and fish products met export-quality standards.
Notably, IMTA-RAS is suitable for small and medium-scale farmers, thanks to its simple design and low operating costs. It helps reduce operational expenses while promoting sustainable aquaculture development, lowering emissions, and safeguarding aquatic ecosystems.
To scale up this model, collaboration among research institutes, universities, and businesses is essential, alongside financial support policies, technical training, and the application of digital technologies for real-time monitoring and management.
