Microbial Solutions – Boosting Shrimp Farming Performance
Experimental Design and Results
A 42-day grow-out trial was conducted in Vietnam using whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) reared at high density in outdoor tanks with minimal water exchange, simulating commercial conditions.
Four treatment groups were tested:
Control group
Antibiotic group (ABX)
Lallemand group:
LALPACK Probio and LALPACK Immune added to feed
LALSEA Biorem added to pond water
Combined group (LAL + ABX)
A sudden freshwater challenge was applied to simulate non-pathogenic stress, assessing shrimp recovery capabilities. Microbiological analysis was performed to evaluate bacterial levels in shrimp gut and pond water. Additionally, 16S rRNA sequencing was used to analyze water microbial communities, alongside water biochemical assessments.

Key Findings
Growth and biomass: All supplemented groups showed significant improvements in average daily gain and overall biomass compared to the control group (Figure 1A).
Stress recovery:
Lallemand group: 14% longer time to reach 50% mortality
Combined group: 29% increase in resilience compared to control
Water quality: The lowest ammonia and nitrite levels were observed in both Lallemand groups (Figure 1B).
Gut health: Lactic acid bacteria levels were significantly higher in both Lallemand groups, indicating healthier gut microbiota.
Microbial community shifts (via 16S sequencing):
Increased Candidatus Aquiluna (linked to carbon metabolism and nutrient uptake)
Decreased NS3a_marine group (associated with harmful dinoflagellate blooms)
Conclusion from Lallemand Expert:
“This research demonstrates that selecting the right microbial solutions for both feed and water can significantly improve shrimp performance and promote sustainable farming practices,” said Ana Rodiles, researcher at Lallemand Animal Nutrition.
“Our findings confirm that microbial-based strategies enhance shrimp resilience, gut health, and water quality—results that are measurable and scientifically validated through sequencing technologies.”
