Argentina expands squid fishing grounds, output increases
The 2026 fishing season for Argentine shortfin squid (Illex argentinus) has entered a new phase with the opening of waters north of latitude 44° South. This decision is based on several weeks of resource surveys showing that biological indicators and population structure in the area meet favorable development conditions. Fishing vessels have begun shifting their operations northward, closer to the port of Mar del Plata, helping to shorten travel distances and improve harvesting efficiency.

Reports from experimental fishing vessels recorded an average catch of 32 tons per day, with a diverse size distribution (S, M, L), indicating that resource density and fishing potential have improved significantly. The proportion of smaller individuals has decreased, and the population structure has become more balanced, providing a foundation for sustainable management. The scientific observer system continues to monitor, ensuring ongoing supervision of resources, fishing intensity, and catch composition. Southern fishing grounds remain stable, with the presence of many foreign fleets creating significant competition. The expansion of northern fishing grounds helps Argentina’s fleet enhance production capacity, maintain market supply, and support logistics and seafood processing. The squid resource is currently assessed as stable, opening prospects for a sustainable 2026 fishing season.
