Americans Favor Vietnamese Tilapia, Securing Tens of Millions in Orders
Of particular interest, exports of Vietnamese tilapia to the U.S. market in 2024 reached USD 19 million, a remarkable growth of 572%. Exports to Japan also doubled compared to 2023.
This strong momentum continued into Q1/2025, with tilapia export revenue reaching nearly USD 14 million, up 131% year-on-year.
The U.S. remains the largest market, accounting for over USD 6 million, triple the value of the same period last year and representing 46% of total export value. Key export products include whole frozen tilapia, frozen fillets, and other processed fish meats.

VASEP reports that the global tilapia market was estimated at USD 10.6 billion in 2024, with projections to grow to USD 14.5 billion by 2033. Global production is currently around 7 million tons and is forecasted to reach 7.3 million tons by 2025.
Vietnam has long been recognized as the world’s largest exporter of pangasius. Both pangasius and tilapia belong to the white-flesh fish group and can be farmed under similar favorable conditions. Tilapia also has the advantage of a short farming cycle of 5–6 months to reach market size (600–800g per fish) with low production costs.
The Mekong Delta currently has 3,300 hectares of surface water suitable for tilapia farming, either in rotation or integration with brackish water shrimp.
Vietnam now ranks 5th in Asia in terms of tilapia production, after China, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and the Philippines. Given the global demand for tilapia is growing at an average of 13% per year, and the U.S. alone imports about 200,000 tons annually, VASEP sees major opportunities ahead for Vietnamese tilapia.
Notably, Vietnamese tilapia products are gaining popularity in the European Union, a region known for its strict import standards, providing a further boost for expanding export markets.
Additionally, China’s declining supply and the U.S. imposing anti-dumping duties of up to 125% on Chinese tilapia have created a rare opportunity for Vietnam to expand its global market share.
