Shrimp Farming: A Promising Food Industry Moving Toward Sustainable Development
The “Harvesting Water” report, released by the World Bank (WB) and WWF, affirms that aquaculture—particularly shrimp farming—is among the top sustainable investment opportunities over the next 25 years. The sector could generate up to 22 million new jobs by 2050 while providing a source of protein with the lowest greenhouse gas emissions among all forms of food production.
Ecuador, the world’s second-largest shrimp producer, achieved a production volume of 1.477 million tons and export revenue of USD 6.3 billion in 2024. Its success comes from a medium-density farming model, the use of electric aerators instead of diesel-powered ones, efficient feed conversion ratio management (FCR of 1.4), three crops per year, and a fully integrated production chain. However, the industry faces environmental risks, El Niño events, mangrove deforestation, and pressure to diversify export markets.

In Bangladesh, black tiger shrimp accounts for 75% of seafood export value, equivalent to USD 530 million. Yet, small-scale production, low productivity (0.37 tons/ha), disease outbreaks, poor-quality broodstock, and limited access to finance remain major barriers.
Thailand reported a giant freshwater prawn output of 45,815 tons in 2023, worth USD 287 million. The sector has advanced through improved breeding (monosex prawns) but faces challenges from diseases, climate change, and labor shortages.
As natural fisheries decline, shrimp farming is emerging as a sustainable protein solution—but its success will depend on technological innovation, environmental management, and effective financial support.
