Ca Mau’s shrimp industry moves towards “green” growth
Leading the country in shrimp farming area, the Mekong delta province of Ca Mau is shifting to a green, clean, and sustainable strategy. Closed-loop, zero-waste shrimp farms are emerging, helping the province adapt to climate change and laying the foundation to become Vietnam’s clean shrimp hub.
The plan emphasizes strengthening the application of advanced, modern technologies throughout the entire production value chain, while reorganizing production towards cooperation and linkage models. The goal is to improve productivity, output, quality, and the competitiveness of Ca Mau’s shrimp sector, bringing practical benefits to farmers and businesses. This will also contribute to achieving a 7.1% growth rate in Sector 1 (fisheries – agriculture – forestry) during the last six months of 2025.
Ca Mau Province has also introduced measures to strengthen cooperation and market linkage for shrimp produced under extensive and improved extensive farming models.
The province has set specific targets: maintaining 198,000 hectares of improved extensive shrimp farming with an average yield of 450 kg/ha/year; maintaining 13,200 hectares of super-intensive farming with an average yield of 20–21 tons/ha/year, while expanding zero-discharge super-intensive farming areas; establishing cooperatives and organizing production under value-chain linkage models; and certifying quality standards for 100,000 hectares of improved extensive shrimp (yield of 550 kg/ha) and around 1,000 hectares of super-intensive farms.

Ca Mau aims for a total farmed shrimp output of 587,000 tons and an export value of USD 2.5 billion this year.
After the administrative merger, Ca Mau has the largest shrimp-farming area in Vietnam
The Ca Mau Provincial People’s Committee has set out a series of key tasks and solutions. Among them, local party and government leadership at the commune level must identify the breakthrough shrimp-industry development plan as a central priority.
The province will also select reputable enterprises experienced in value-chain linkage and encourage cooperatives, farming groups, and shrimp farmers to participate transparently and effectively.
Following the merger with Bac Lieu Province, Ca Mau now has a total aquaculture area of approximately 450,000 hectares, of which about 90% is dedicated to shrimp farming—placing it first in the country.
