Rising Prices Bring Big Profits for Shrimp Farmers
Mr. Nguyễn Văn Tài, a trader specializing in commercial shrimp at the provincial market in Trà Vinh, reported that the prices of black tiger shrimp and white-leg shrimp have been increasing since early May 2025 and surged even higher from early June to now. Specifically, over the past week, black tiger shrimp (20 pcs/kg) were purchased at 220,000 VND/kg; white-leg shrimp (30 pcs/kg) fetched 190,000–200,000 VND/kg; and black tiger shrimp (40 pcs/kg) sold for 160,000 VND/kg. Compared to early June, black tiger shrimp prices rose by 20,000–30,000 VND/kg, depending on size. For white-leg shrimp, the purchase prices were 145,000 VND/kg for 30 pcs/kg, 120,000 VND/kg for 40 pcs/kg, and 110,000 VND/kg for 50 pcs/kg—an average increase of 10,000 VND/kg.
According to Mr. Ngô Thanh Hải in Long Khánh commune, Duyên Hải district, his family recently harvested 0.4 hectares of intensive white-leg shrimp. Thanks to favorable conditions, the shrimp grew uniformly and reached 40–45 pcs/kg. Traders bought them at 140,000 VND/kg at the pond, and after deducting costs, he made an average profit of 25,000 VND/kg of market-size shrimp. For this crop, farmers with sufficient land and capital to raise shrimp under high-density intensive models saw profits 5 to 6 times higher than traditional intensive farming, thanks to an average yield of 55 tons per hectare.

Mr. Trần Trường Giang, Director of Trà Vinh Department of Agriculture and Environment, stated that farmers in coastal areas of the province have stocked over 21,450 hectares of black tiger shrimp and nearly 5,650 hectares of white-leg shrimp. The total seed stock is about 5.1 billion shrimp. Harvested output has reached nearly 36,700 tons—approximately 45% of the yearly target.
The province’s agriculture sector consistently advises coastal farmers who meet the necessary conditions to adopt high-tech shrimp farming and aim for two crops per year. During the off-season, it is recommended to switch to other brackish or saltwater aquatic species with high economic value, such as mud crabs or certain fish, to increase income.
Additionally, the sector encourages farmers to expand black tiger and white-leg shrimp farming using the forest–shrimp integrated extensive model, combined with other aquatic species. This ecological aquaculture model is sustainable, and products such as black tiger shrimp, white-leg shrimp, mud crab, and various fish from this model consistently fetch higher market prices due to their clean quality. On average, ecologically farmed shrimp are bought at prices 20–30% higher than those from industrial farming.
