India’s shrimp exports accelerate despite the trade war with the United States
Despite escalating trade tensions with the United States, India’s shrimp sector continues to show strong growth in fiscal year 2026, according to the Economic Times. Data from CareEdge Ratings indicates that in the first five months of the fiscal year, India’s shrimp exports increased by 18% in value to USD 2.43 billion, and by 11% in volume, reaching 348,000 tonsThis expansion is primarily driven by rising demand from markets outside the United States. Previously, the U.S. was the largest destination for India’s shrimp, but amid the ongoing trade confrontation, markets such as Vietnam, Belgium, China, and Russia are rapidly taking its place. Exports to non-U.S. markets increased by as much as 30%, reaching USD 1.38 billion in the same period, reflecting a strategic shift among Indian exporters.

According to the Economic Times, the growth momentum comes from Indian companies expanding into previously difficult-to-access markets, diversifying risks, and reducing their dependence on the U.S. market. Trade tensions between the two countries escalated after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 50% tariff on goods from India, effective August 27. Trump stated that the decision was partly related to India continuing to import oil and gas from Russia.Despite facing higher export costs to the U.S. market, India’s shrimp industry continues to sustain its growth thanks to market expansion strategies and steady demand from Asian, European, and Russian markets.
