Taurine: Supporting the Reduction of Reproductive Waiting Time in Shrimp Broodstock
Taurine Supplementation May Enhance Weight Gain and Protein Utilization in Grow-Out Shrimp
Results showed that taurine supplementation did not significantly affect the growth or survival rate of female P. vannamei, suggesting that during maturation, nutrients and energy are prioritized for gonadal development and gamete formation rather than somatic growth. Previous research indicated that taurine supplementation at 0.4–0.8 g/kg could improve growth and protein utilization in grow-out shrimp, while 25 mg/kg improved survival and molting rates in larvae.
A report by Shi et al. found that 4 g/kg taurine improved growth and feed utilization in P. vannamei when fishmeal was replaced with plant-based protein. Additionally, taurine levels of 5.7–6.6 g/kg enhanced the shrimp's cold tolerance. The optimal taurine requirement depends on species, genetics, life stage, and rearing conditions.

Taurine supplementation between 4–8 g/kg in the diet improved ovarian maturation and taurine storage in the ovaries of P. vannamei. At levels of 4–10 g/kg, taurine boosted antioxidant capacity, lipid digestion, and lipase (LIP) enzyme activity. Supplementing taurine at 10 g/kg increased DHA levels in the ovaries, likely due to enhanced absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Shrimp fed with taurine showed higher cholesterol and HDL levels, increased lipid mobilization from the hepatopancreas to the ovary, enhanced bile acid synthesis, cholesterol absorption, LIP activity, DHA retention, and vitellogenin gene expression.
Conclusion
Supplementing 4–8 g/kg taurine in the diet significantly reduced the reproductive waiting time in female P. vannamei. As dietary taurine increased, both DHA and taurine levels in the ovaries rose, while plasma protein, calcium, cholesterol, and HDL also improved at supplementation levels of 6–10 g/kg. Vitellogenin gene expression and several enzyme activities were enhanced in the hepatopancreas of broodstock fed 6–10 g/kg taurine. Overall, taurine at 4–8 g/kg in the diet can improve maturation and health status in P. vannamei broodstock by regulating lipid metabolism, enhancing antioxidant defenses, and boosting immune function.
