Shrimp production surged in the first month of the year, with exports benefiting from strong demand during the Lunar New Year holiday
Shrimp farming and capture production in January 2026 recorded positive growth, driven by stable prices and strong consumer demand during the Lunar New Year. China–Hong Kong continued to be a bright spot, with imports of Vietnamese shrimp increasing significantly. In January 2026, the country’s farmed shrimp output was estimated at 49,900 tons, up 6.6% compared to the same period last year, making it one of the fastest-growing segments in aquaculture. This growth was largely supported by stable shrimp prices, encouraging farmers to accelerate harvests to meet both domestic consumption and export demand during the Tet holiday.

January 2026 witnessed a strong rise in shrimp production and exports thanks to robust Tet-related demand
In terms of production structure, whiteleg shrimp remained dominant at 28,500 tons, up 7.5% year-on-year. Black tiger shrimp reached approximately 16,000 tons, an increase of 4.6%. In addition to aquaculture, captured shrimp output in the month reached 9,400 tons, up 4.4%, contributing to additional market supply. Regarding exports, China–Hong Kong continued to be Vietnam’s largest shrimp market in January, with seafood export turnover reaching nearly USD 250 million, up 28.7% year-on-year. The main driver was import demand for shrimp serving the Lunar New Year, particularly in the premium lobster segment. Many enterprises accelerated shipments to this market ahead of the holiday break. However, export prospects for February are expected to be less dynamic. Production and shipment activities may be disrupted by the Tet holiday, along with the impact of anti-dumping tax results on shrimp in the U.S. and the possibility of declining Chinese import demand following a period of strong stockpiling. Nevertheless, the positive growth in the first month of the year signals promising prospects for the shrimp industry in 2026.
