Shrimp farming in the desert: China transforms arid land into a sea farm using technology
Core Technology: Turning Saline Groundwater into Artificial Seawater
The success of the project did not come from building massive pipelines to bring seawater into the desert. Instead, scientists found a much more sustainable and intelligent solution: utilizing the naturally saline groundwater beneath the desert itself.
Aquaculture experts in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region developed a specialized treatment process. Through scientific adjustments, they created a technique to produce artificial seawater, opening up the possibility of farming various aquatic species right in the heart of arid land.

Initial Success and Great Potential
The first harvest of whiteleg shrimp has shown very promising results. The shrimp had a high survival rate, were healthy, and—according to local consumers—tasted just as fresh and flavorful as wild-caught shrimp from the sea.
This success brings significant economic and social benefits. It not only provides fresh seafood for a remote inland region—drastically reducing transportation costs and time—but also creates jobs and a new economic direction for a harsh and barren landscape.
A Lesson in Breakthrough Thinking and Food Security
China’s shrimp farming project in the desert is not just a technological achievement in aquaculture; it is a powerful example of breakthrough thinking—turning a disadvantage (saline groundwater) into a valuable resource for economic development.
Amid global challenges like food security and climate change, this model offers an entirely new path forward. It highlights the potential for replication in arid regions and landlocked countries worldwide, helping them secure a portion of their high-quality protein supply while contributing to the sustainable development of global aquaculture.
