Vietnam Shrimp Export Rankings by Country
China & Hong Kong
After declining in Q2/2024, Vietnam's shrimp exports to China & HK rebounded strongly in Q3 and Q4. In Q4/2024, shrimp exports to this market rose by 69%, reaching USD 258 million. For the whole of 2024, shrimp exports to this market reached USD 843 million, up 39% compared to 2023. Thanks to strong growth, China & HK surpassed the U.S. to become the largest importer of Vietnamese shrimp.
Domestic shrimp supply in China declined due to adverse weather, and Ecuador also reduced shrimp exports to China in 2024. China also introduced various measures to boost consumer spending, supporting shrimp imports into this market.
In 2024, among Vietnam’s shrimp products exported to China & HK, other shrimp types accounted for the highest proportion at 51.7% due to a sharp increase in lobster imports from Vietnam. Whiteleg shrimp accounted for 36.1% and black tiger shrimp for 12.2%.

United States
In 2024, Vietnam's shrimp exports to the U.S. reached USD 756 million, an 11% increase over 2023. In all four quarters of 2024, shrimp exports to the U.S. only declined in Q2 and recorded positive growth in the remaining three quarters. Exports to this market tended to accelerate in the second half of the year.
In 2024, among shrimp products exported to the U.S., whiteleg shrimp still held the largest share (84.3%), followed by black tiger shrimp (9.3%), with the remainder being other shrimp types.

Japan
In 2024, Vietnam's shrimp exports to Japan reached USD 517 million, up 1% compared to 2023. After declining in the first two quarters of 2024, exports to Japan recovered in Q3 and Q4, although the growth was not high.
From mid-Q3/2024, the Japanese yen strengthened significantly, improving purchasing power. In addition, India—Vietnam's competitor in the Japanese market—faced controversy over the use of underage labor, leading Japanese importers to turn more to Vietnamese shrimp.
EU
In 2024, shrimp exports to the EU reached USD 484 million, up 15% from 2023. Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium were the three largest importers in the bloc. In 2024, exports to these three markets all grew by double digits, with the Netherlands recording the strongest growth at 22%.
In the structure of shrimp products exported to the EU in 2024, whiteleg shrimp accounted for the largest proportion at 80.6%, black tiger shrimp 12.2%, and other types made up the remainder.

South Korea
In 2024, shrimp exports to this market reached USD 334 million, down 3% compared to 2023. Shrimp exports to South Korea still faced challenges due to the shrimp import quota system, which imposed considerable costs on exporters.
According to ITC data, in the first 11 months of 2024, South Korea’s shrimp imports reached USD 723 million, up 3% year-on-year. Vietnam remained the largest shrimp supplier to South Korea, holding a dominant market share of 46%. China ranked second with 10%. During the first 11 months of 2024, South Korea also increased shrimp imports from Peru, China, and Canada.
