China Strengthens Imports of Vietnamese Shrimp
Currently, China is experiencing a surge in demand for seafood to meet domestic consumption needs and to prepare for the 5-day International Labor Day holiday.
In March, the export price of black tiger shrimp from Vietnam to China remained at USD 9.6/kg, slightly higher than in January. However, the price of whiteleg shrimp stayed low, at just USD 6.6/kg, indicating intense competition from Ecuadorian and Indian shrimp.
On the other hand, Vietnamese shrimp exports to the United States reached USD 134 million in Q1, up 11% due to rising demand.
The U.S. remains the market with the highest and most stable shrimp prices. In March, the average export price for Vietnamese whiteleg shrimp was USD 10.9/kg, while black tiger shrimp fetched USD 17.7/kg.
However, starting April 2 (U.S. time), President Donald Trump imposed reciprocal tariffs on all countries to reduce trade deficits and protect domestic industries.
Vietnamese shrimp exporters now face new import tariffs in addition to pressure from two lawsuits: one for anti-dumping (AD) and another for countervailing duties (CVD) in the U.S.

Besides these markets, the European Union (EU) also increased its shrimp imports from Vietnam.
In Q1, the EU spent over USD 107 million on Vietnamese shrimp, up 33%. The export price of whiteleg shrimp remained stable, while the price of black tiger shrimp rose slightly to USD 10.9/kg in March.
Meanwhile, exports to two other major markets, Japan and South Korea, brought in USD 124 million and USD 77 million, respectively. Japan currently has strong demand for processed shrimp and convenient frozen products.
However, export prices are trending downward after a strong surge early in the year. Whiteleg shrimp fell from USD 9.5/kg to 8.4/kg, and black tiger shrimp dropped from USD 14.7/kg to 13.6/kg.
