Vietnam’s Shrimp Exports Surge
The United States ranks second in shrimp consumption, with an 11% increase, reaching USD 134 million. It is also the market offering the highest export prices—averaging USD 10.9 per kg for whiteleg shrimp and USD 17.7 per kg for black tiger shrimp. Prices remain more stable in the U.S. compared to other markets.

The European Union also showed strong performance, bringing in USD 107 million in revenue, up 33%. Japan and South Korea recorded growth of 20% and 16%, respectively, reaching USD 124 million and USD 77 million. In Japan, ready-to-eat and frozen shrimp products are particularly favored.
Looking ahead, VASEP noted that although the U.S. has temporarily postponed imposing countervailing duties, this still poses pressure on Vietnam’s shrimp sector. The U.S. currently accounts for around 20% of Vietnam’s shrimp export value—equivalent to USD 800 million to 1 billion annually.
Vietnamese shrimp also faces two trade remedy investigations in the U.S.—an anti-dumping (AD) and a countervailing duty (CVD) case. Although the current CVD rate for Vietnam is 2.84%, lower than India’s 5.77% and Ecuador’s 3.78%, strict U.S. requirements on product origin and quality may increase compliance costs and impact profitability.
To achieve the 2025 shrimp export target of USD 4 billion, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment emphasizes the need for a coordinated strategy: strengthening trade promotion at international exhibitions, investing in processing technologies, and aligning with global standards such as FDA, ASC, and MSC certifications.
Vietnam is also actively negotiating with the U.S. while maximizing benefits from free trade agreements (FTAs) such as the CPTPP and EVFTA to diversify export markets. According to VASEP, tight supply chain control and increased imports from the U.S. are also considered strategic moves to reduce pressure from Washington’s protectionist policies.
