ANGUILLA BICOLOR BICOLOR (Black Eel) A Popular High-Quality Food from Japan
1. Introduction
The black eel, also known as the Japanese eel (Anguilla Japonica), is a freshwater fish from the Anguillidae family. It resembles an eel with a long, slim body, and is typically dark in color, often black or dark brown.
Black eels are also considered a traditional medicine in Eastern medicine, with effects such as enhancing vitality, improving blood circulation, and strengthening muscles and bones
Black eels are also considered a remedy in traditional Eastern medicine, believed to enhance vitality, improve blood circulation, and strengthen bones and tendons.
While black eels live in freshwater, they migrate to the sea to spawn once they reach maturity. They are nocturnal and avoid light, adapting well to brackish water and capable of moving onto land in search of food.
Biological characteristics:
Shape: Black eels have pointed heads and long bodies, typically growing between 1 to 2 meters in length when fully mature.
Color: Their dark skin helps them blend into their environment.
Reproduction: Black eels have a unique life cycle. They spawn at sea, and the young eels migrate to rivers and streams, where they develop in freshwater until reaching maturity.
2. Characteristics
Black eels are omnivores, with a natural diet of shrimp, small fish, bottom-dwelling animals, and other aquatic organisms. When young, they primarily feed on plankton, including Cladocera and oligochaetes. Black eels grow slowly, reaching only 200 grams in their first year, even with optimal feeding conditions.
The black eel, also known as the Japanese eel, primarily lives in both freshwater and saltwater environments. They have a unique life cycle
Black eels, or Japanese eels, thrive in both freshwater and saltwater environments. They are distinguished from other catfish species by their pointed, flattened heads, small eyes, and lack of pelvic fins. After cooking, their meat is firm and slightly chewy, with thick skin.
3. Nutritional Value
Black eels are considered a premium aquatic delicacy. Their meat is rich in nutrients, including vitamins, protein, iron, and potassium. Known for their nutritional value, black eels are highly regarded for their rich, savory taste and health benefits. In traditional medicine, they are believed to enhance male vitality and kidney health, with a taste comparable to bird’s nest and deer tendon. Black eel liver is also used to treat digestive issues.
Black eel is a highly popular food in many countries, especially in Japanese cuisine.
In Japan, eel is a traditional dish served during holidays and summer, particularly during Doyō no Ushi no Hi, when people believe that eating eel boosts strength in the hot season. Black eel is often prepared in various forms, such as sushi, sashimi, or grilled.
4. Successful Export of Black Eel to Japan Thanks to the Recirculating Water Filtration System
In Vietnam, we had the opportunity to collaborate on the installation of 11 Aquaculture round tanks for Mr. Cơ in Đồng Tháp. He used a recirculating filtration system to raise black eels, saving costs, protecting the environment, and meeting Japanese export standards.
Black eels are farmed at Mr. Co's farm.
At Mr. Co's farm, black eels thrive thanks to tight control of water quality, feed, weather, and stocking density. One of the key factors in their rapid growth is increasing oxygen levels. According to Mr. Co, the eels are raised by channeling river water through a settling tank and a recirculating filtration system. He invested in a Rex oxygen generator, which dissolves oxygen in the water, helping the eels absorb oxygen more efficiently, leading to healthier and faster growth.
The oxygen generation system that Mr. Cơ has invested in thoroughly helps his fish grow faster and healthier during the farming process.
Representatives from our partners visited Mr. Co's farm, tasted grilled eel, and were impressed. They promised to conduct another inspection before placing an order for export to Japan.
