An Giang will start raising brackish water shrimp as early as the beginning of 2026

Mr. Quach Thanh Toan, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of An Giang province, has just signed and issued the framework for the stocking schedule of brackish water shrimp in 2026, helping farmers proactively manage production, reduce risks, and improve sustainable efficiency.

Based on the 2025-2026 dry season meteorological and hydrological forecasts, combined with a summary of production practices over the years, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of An Giang province has issued a framework for the stocking schedule of brackish water shrimp in 2026. The overarching goal is to minimize the adverse impacts of weather, control diseases, and simultaneously improve productivity, quality, and economic efficiency for shrimp farmers.

Accordingly, for the shrimp-rice rotation farming model: In the U Minh Thuong region, stocking will take place from January to May 2026, with harvesting completed by August 2026. In the coastal area of the Long Xuyen Quadrangle, stocking will take place from early February to May 2026, with harvesting completed by August 2026. For giant freshwater prawn farming intercropped with rice, stocking will take place from April to August 2026, with harvesting after 5-6 months of farming, depending on the specific conditions of each region.
For improved extensive shrimp farming combined with mangrove shrimp (shrimp, crab, fish) and mangrove shrimp farming, stocking can be done year-round or in a mixed system with selective harvesting. However, it is necessary to interrupt the farming cycle at least once a year (for a minimum of 30 days) to rehabilitate the ponds and eliminate pathogens. For semi-intensive, intensive, and high-tech shrimp farming: Stocking can be done from January to October 2026 or year-round if there are measures to completely control farming conditions.

The 2026 brackish water shrimp farming season is predicted to continue to be strongly affected by prolonged heatwaves, increased saltwater intrusion, and the risk of early unseasonal rains. Years of experience have shown that stocking shrimp outside of the seasonal schedule has led to significant risks for many farmers. Disease outbreaks, drastic changes in pond environments, increased costs, and low efficiency are all consequences. Therefore, a well-established seasonal schedule is considered a compass that helps farmers proactively avoid risks and rationally plan each stage of the production chain.
Towards safe and efficient shrimp farming.
Beyond simply finalizing the stocking schedule, An Giang's 2026 farming calendar clearly demonstrates its orientation towards biosafety and sustainability in shrimp farming. For shrimp-rice farming areas, the 2026 stocking schedule is harmoniously aligned with the rice cultivation cycle, ensuring both ecological requirements and suitability to local conditions.
For the model of intercropping giant freshwater prawns with rice, the stocking period is extended from April to August 2026. This arrangement allows farmers to be more proactive in the nursery and rearing of prawn larvae, improving the survival rate before releasing them into the rice paddies for commercial farming.

With improved extensive farming models, including mangrove shrimp farming, experts continue to recommend strict pond renovation and crop rotation to eliminate disease outbreaks, a key factor in maintaining stable production amidst increasingly evident climate change.
Notably, for intensive, semi-intensive, and high-tech farming models, An Giang encourages eligible facilities to proactively stagger their farming seasons from the beginning of the year. However, this staggered farming must be accompanied by strict control measures on water quality, seed quality, biosecurity, and food safety throughout the farming process.

Simultaneously, An Giang's agricultural sector requires specialized units and localities to strengthen technical training, promote environmental monitoring, and provide timely disease warnings to farmers. Support for registering farm codes and facilitating traceability is also emphasized to meet the increasingly stringent requirements of domestic and export markets.
Adhering to seasonal schedules, combined with the application of technological advancements and good management of inputs, will help farmers reduce costs, minimize risks, and improve economic efficiency. More importantly, this is the foundation for An Giang's brackish water shrimp industry to gradually develop towards a modern, safe, and sustainable direction, better adapting to unpredictable fluctuations caused by climate change.
