Giant freshwater prawn prices surge, farmers in U Minh Thuong enjoy a bumper harvest
The atmosphere of giant freshwater prawn harvesting in early September in U Minh Thuong is more bustling than in previous years, as record-high prices bring significant income to farmers.
According to traders, grade-1 prawns (8–10 pieces/kg) are currently purchased at the farm for VND 195,000–200,000/kg; grade-2 (12–15 pieces/kg) at VND 145,000–155,000/kg; and prawns of 20 pieces or more per kilogram around VND 130,000/kg. These prices are VND 50,000–60,000/kg higher than the same period last year.

Mr. Tran Van Tam, a farmer in An Bien commune, shared:
“This year, disease and unfavorable weather reduced yields, leading to limited supply and soaring prices. With 2 hectares of ponds, my family harvested over 1 ton of prawns, earning nearly VND 100 million in profit after expenses.”
Currently, An Giang has about 100,000 hectares of rice–prawn farming, with a large concentration in U Minh Thuong. Tens of thousands of hectares are applying crop rotation or integrated farming of giant freshwater prawns with black tiger shrimp and whiteleg shrimp, bringing high economic efficiency.
The sharp rise in prawn prices has helped many farming households earn hundreds of millions of dong, reaffirming that giant freshwater prawns continue to be the “golden advantage” of the wetlands region, contributing to sustainable livelihoods for An Giang’s farmers.
