Rare Lobster Species Discovered in Taiwan
According to local media, the newly found lobster was identified by a scientist from National University of Tainan (NUTN) and has not been previously cataloged in Taiwan. After three years of research, Associate Professor Huang Ming-chih from NUTN’s Department of Biotechnology and Bioindustry concluded that this lobster species is endemic to Taiwan.
Initially, scientists believed this crustacean to be an invasive species, but many fishermen from the Keelung area later confirmed that they had caught similar lobsters off the Dongsha (Pratas) Islands.

Huang revealed that fishermen had spoken of the beautiful red-and-white lobsters for many years, but none had ever been observed by scientists. Upon closer study, it was determined that this species is scientifically known as *Metanephrops neptunus*, commonly referred to as the Neptune lobster. It can be distinguished by its red shell and legs, with its abdomen and tail colored white.
Previously, this deep-sea lobster was only recorded in the South China Sea in 1965 and off the western coast of Australia at depths of 300 to 600 meters.
During field research in the Keelung area, Huang, along with expert Kawai Tadashi from the Wakkanai Fisheries Research Institute, caught 10 adult Neptune lobsters, including three egg-bearing females. Huang described the discovery as significant, providing valuable insight into the ecosystem of this rare species.
Scientists report that of the 45 lobster species worldwide, around 14 to 16 are endemic to Taiwan, mainly found off the coasts of Taitung, Hualien, Yilan, Keelung, the Hengchun Penisula, and Penghu.

According to Keelung fishermen, this newly discovered lobster is extremely rare, with only around 40 caught each year. Due to its rarity and unusual coloration, it has become one of the most expensive lobster species in the world.
